Standard light sources are lighting light box equipment, which are generally equipped with various types of lamps to simulate different standard light sources. Among them, the more common ones are TL84 and D65 light sources. They are both white light sources in terms of properties. D65 light sources are standard white light sources, while TL84 light sources are warm white light sources. This article introduces the meaning and difference between TL84 and D65 light sources.

What is the TL84 light source?

TL84 light source is a narrow-band fluorescent light source, a tri-color fluorescent lamp, commonly used in stores and office environments in Europe and the Pacific Rim. Its color temperature is about 4000K, corresponding to the CIE standard illuminant F11. This is a light suitable for stores in Europe. The light color emitted by its light source is very close to the CWF light source. Generally speaking, the difference between these two light sources is difficult for the naked eye to distinguish. European and Japanese customers usually specify TL84 color matching, so European standard color matching light boxes are generally equipped with TL84 light sources. The main features of TL84 light sources include:

1. Color temperature: The color temperature of the TL84 light source is 4000K, which is equivalent to daylight during the day, giving people a warm and natural feeling.

2. Color rendering index: The color rendering index of the TL84 light source is 95, which means that it can present the color of objects very accurately, making the color of objects under the TL84 light source very close to the actual color.

3. Spectral distribution: The spectral distribution of the TL84 light source is similar to daylight during the day and includes all wavelengths in the visible spectrum, which makes it widely used in fields such as color evaluation, color management and lighting design.

4. Irradiance: The irradiance of the TL84 light source is 1000 lux, which is a relatively high brightness that can provide enough brightness to evaluate the color of an object.

Due to the above characteristics, TL84 light source is widely used in color fields such as textiles, dyeing, printing, plastics, pigments, paints, inks, photography, etc. to accurately calibrate the color deviation of goods. TL84 light source is also widely used as a standard light source in stores in Europe, Japan, China and other regions.

What is D65 light source?

D65 light source is the most commonly used artificial simulated daylight in China. Its color temperature is 6500K, which is the average natural daylight in the north. It can replace natural light for color matching and is suitable for general requirements. Most customers specify D65 for color matching to ensure that when observing the color effect of objects indoors or on rainy days, there is a lighting effect similar to that of observing under sunlight.

Simply put, the D65 standard light source is an artificial light source that simulates daylight, and its spectral value conforms to the visual color standards of Europe and Pacific Rim countries. The D here refers to the English word "day", and D65 refers to the color at a color temperature of 6500K. This is a "ruler" used by scientists to measure the color of our daily sunlight. The color of sunlight is different from sunrise to sunset every day. Because we are in different positions on the earth, the natural light conditions under which we are used to observing colors are also different. Usually, the D65 standard light source is used to match colors in China. The main features of the D65 light source are as follows:

1. High color rendering index: The color rendering index Ra of D65 light source is greater than 90%, which can simulate the color under natural sunlight, ensuring that the color performance is more realistic when observing objects indoors or on rainy days.

2. Good stability: The D65 light source has excellent stability and can maintain the consistency of spectral characteristics during long-term use, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of color evaluation.

3. Uniform spectral distribution: The spectral distribution of D65 light source is uniform, which can provide balanced lighting in each wavelength range and avoid color distortion caused by uneven spectral distribution.

4. Simulated daylight: The color temperature of the D65 light source is 6500K, and its spectral characteristics are closest to natural light. It can provide lighting effects similar to natural light, which is particularly suitable for the field of color detection to ensure the accuracy of the color of the observed object.

The difference between TL84 light source and D65 light source:

From the above description, it can be seen that there are obvious differences between the standard light source TL84 light source and the D65 light source in many aspects.

First of all, their color temperatures are different. The color temperature of the TL84 light source is about 4000K, while the color temperature of the D65 light source is 6500K, which leads to differences in their light colors.

Secondly, the application scenarios of the two are also different. D65 light source is the most commonly used artificial simulated daylight in China. It is suitable for observing the color effects of objects indoors and on rainy days, providing a lighting effect similar to that of observing under sunlight. TL84 light source is commonly used in stores and office environments in Europe and the Pacific Rim, and is a color matching light source commonly used by European and Japanese customers.

In addition, the TL84 light source is a narrow-band fluorescent light source, a three-primary-color fluorescent lamp, and the light color it emits is very close to that of the CWF light source. The D65 light source has excellent stability and can maintain the consistency of spectral characteristics during long-term use, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of color evaluation.

CWF light source

The difference between TL84 light source and CWF light source:

TL84 light source is a three-primary color fluorescent light source, a kind of cold white light, with a color temperature of 4000K, and is a commonly used color light source in Europe. It is close to the color light source CWF in American stores, corresponds to the CIE standard illuminant F11, and is also a commonly used color light source in standard light boxes. So, what is the difference between TL84 light source and CWF light source? The difference between TL84 light source and CWF light source is mainly reflected in the following three aspects:

1. The difference in color temperature

The color temperature of CWF light source is 4150K, while that of TL84 light source is 4000K. Generally speaking, light sources with different color temperatures will present different light colors, but it is difficult for the human eye to distinguish light sources with small color temperature differences.

2. Difference in color rendering index

The main difference between CWF light source and TL84 light source lies in the color rendering index. CWF light source is an ordinary fluorescent lamp, while TL84 light source is a three-primary color fluorescent lamp. The color rendering index of CWF light source is 62, while the color rendering index of TL84 light source can reach 85.

3. Difference in scope of application

CWF is a commercial fluorescent lamp for the United States, so American customers may specify CWF for color matching. TL84 is a commercial fluorescent lamp for Europe, so European customers may specify TL84 for color matching.

The difference between D65 light source and D50 light source:

The standard illuminant D represents the relative spectral distribution of sunlight at different time phases. The D50 standard illuminant refers to the relative spectral power distribution of sunlight with a color temperature of about 5000K, while D65 refers to the relative spectral power distribution of sunlight with a color temperature of about 6500K. In order to better simulate the lighting effect of D50 and D65 light sources, it is necessary to use artificial standard light sources D50 and D65. Therefore, the main difference between D50 and D65 light sources is the color temperature.

The color temperature of D50 light source is 5000K, which is recognized as the standard color temperature (ICC standard) by the world printing industry and is usually used in the field of printing or pre-publishing. Its conditions are similar to those under daylight. Although the color is relatively normal, it is not easy to find the change of yellow ink.

D65 light source is also known as the international standard artificial daylight (Artificial Daylight). Its color temperature is 6500K (color temperature). It is used as the standard light source for evaluating the color of goods. Especially during the night shift, it is particularly important to use standard light sources to detect color deviations of goods. In addition to the D65 standard light source that must be included in the multi-light source standard light source box, there are also TL84, CWF, UV, F, A, U30, HOR and other light sources. It has the function of testing the metamerism effect.

D65 and D50 usually refer to two standard light sources, including color temperature, color rendering index, metamerism index, illumination, etc. The biggest difference between them is that the color temperature of D65 is 6500K, the light is blue, which is closer to the color of ordinary fluorescent lamps; the color temperature of D50 is 5000K, and the light is slightly red. At present, D50 is basically used as the standard observation condition internationally, but in China, D65 is still one of the standard color temperatures widely used.
